MP supports call to pause for Sir Edmund's funeral

Independent MP Gordon Copeland today signalled his support for calls to declare January 22nd a public holiday, or similar.

"Sir Edmund Hillary holds a matchless place of affection in the hearts of all New Zealanders," said Mr Copeland. "Accordingly I think it would be fitting to declare part of next Tuesday a "public holiday" so that as many people as possible can watch Sir Edmund's state funeral on television"

"Sure they can tape the funeral and watch television highlights etc later, but it is not quite the same as really "being there" by watching a live telecast."

"Alternatively we could just ask all businesses to set aside work for the duration of the funeral, so that the whole country can pause to remember our greatest hero."

"In any event I have dropped a note to the Prime Minister's Office suggesting that the idea be given every consideration."
