“Overwhelming” support for ‘Do not call’
register
Public support for a ‘Do not call’ telemarketing register has been “overwhelming”, according to UnitedFuture deputy leader Judy Turner.
“The public reaction has been very strong. In fact I have had nearly unanimous support to establish a ‘Do not call’ register,” says Mrs Turner.
A poll on the NZ Herald website showed 96% support for a register, with more than 1000 votes cast.
“It’s simply a privacy issue.”
Mrs Turner described the poll as one of the most decisive in memory – and consistent with other feedback she received personally and from the positive reaction all over the air waves.
“This is clearly a proposal that is well overdue. New Zealanders are sick and tired of being pestered by advertisers in their own homes at dinner time. Quality family time is already too scarce and having the phone go off during dinner is an unwelcome invasion of privacy.
“The Australian Government created a register to protect their citizens from such intrusions. The same occurs in America. Why do New Zealanders not enjoy the same protection?
“When the Australian register went live it was so popular and inundated with calls that the system completely crashed. The public want a register and they will sign up in droves.
“The Government has dragged its heels over the idea – I’d be interested to hear whether John Key and the National Party would better listen to public opinion and support such a register,” says Mrs Turner.
