Delegation to strengthen New Zealand’s links with Korea and the IPU
A delegation
from the New Zealand Parliament led by Hon Pete Hodgson MP,
Labour, will visit Korea prior to attendance at the 122nd
Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Thailand this
month, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Hon
Dr Lockwood Smith, has announced.
Dr Cam Calder MP, National, and David Clendon MP, Green Party, are the other members of the delegation.
“New Zealand and Korea have strong links and the delegation are utilising the opportunity of being in the region to advance our bilateral relationship prior to attending the IPU Assembly.
During the visit to Seoul, the delegation will meet with their Korean parliamentary colleagues, including two former Prime Minister’s fellows to New Zealand and the Korea-New Zealand Friendship Group. Policy calls will be focused on issues around climate change, education and tourism.
“Promoting New Zealand’s interests will be a priority when the delegation has the opportunity to meet with local business leaders.”
The delegation will visit Seoul between 22 and 25 March before travelling to Bangkok for the IPU Assembly which runs from 27 March to 1 April, 2010.
“The 122nd IPU Assembly in Bangkok is a significant international event, as the IPU is a focal point for dialogue among parliaments of sovereign states.”
“Our presence at the assembly provides an opportunity for New Zealand to contribute to debate on matters of international importance,” he said.
