Dunne: Public-Private Partnerships The Way To Go
UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne is delighted with the Government’s announcement today of a public-private partnership (PPP) to build and run the new prison at Wiri.
“UnitedFuture has for a long-time been an advocate of public-private partnerships and has included in its current Confidence and Supply Agreement with National the use of PPPs for major roading developments such as Transmission Gully,” said Mr Dunne.
“Our agreement also provides for greater private sector involvement in the health sector, particularly for elective surgery.”
“Today’s announcement should be a forerunner of how infrastructure development in areas like roading, school buildings, hospitals etc can occur in the future.”
“While I am not pleased that the prison population has bulged to the extent that we require the extra 1000 beds Wiri provides, I welcome the realism with which this Government has chosen to tackle the project through a PPP.”
“It is good to see that this Government is not burdened by the same ideological inflexibility that prevented the previous Government from investigating PPPs as a solution to our infrastructure needs.”
“PPPs provide greater flexibility in design, building and administration while also being better value for money for the taxpayer,” said Mr Dunne.
