NZ Must Uphold Independent Stance on Security Council

John Key must commit to upholding New Zealand's reputation as a country that takes independent and principled stances on the world stage as we take up a seat on the UNSecurity Council Grant Robertson Labour leadership candidate, and a former New Zealand diplomat at the United Nations, said.

"This was a hard fought campaign to gain a seat, and I warmly congratulate all those involved from Ministers to MFAT staff in New York and around the world. The Security Council is definitely where all the major decisions of the UN are made, and New Zealand has a rare opportunity to play its part."

"Along with hard work, New Zealand gained this opportunity as a result of our long established reputation as a country that takes an independent stance on the world stage, and that stands up for small states. As a country we must uphold that reputation and do the right thing in the pursuit of peace and security and dealing with the major challenges of this century, including climate change."

"Some of the actions and comments by John Key in recent times have raised concerns about New Zealand's independent stance on issues that the Security Council will need to deal with during our term. I urge him to remember our reputation as a peace keeper and builder and a voice for small countries. This is an amazing opportunity to do the right thing and it must not be wasted." Grant Robertson said.
