Speaker to attend regional Presiding Officers Conference

Speaker of Parliament to attend regional Presiding Officers Conference

The Speaker, Rt Hon David Carter, will represent the New Zealand Parliament at the 46th Conference of Presiding Officers and Clerks being held in Hobart, Tasmania from 5 - 9 July.

The Speaker sees the annual conference, attended by Presiding Officers and Clerks from the Australian and Pacific parliaments, as an important forum for knowledge sharing and professional development for the participants.

"Through the presentation of papers on a broad range of parliamentary issues, Presiding Officers and Clerks from Australia and the Pacific will have the opportunity to discuss parliamentary practice and procedure in their respective parliaments, and to learn from each other. This kind of inter-parliamentary dialogue and interaction serves to enhance relationships between the region's parliaments, and enhances the parliamentary knowledge of all those involved."

The Speaker will present a paper titled "Managing parliamentary information - privacy, privilege, and public interest" during the conference.

The New Zealand Parliament is also supporting attendance from Cook Islands and Niue, and alongside the conference two Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) meetings will be held to support regional engagement within the Commonwealth. In addition, the CPA Pacific Region will be discussing its nominee for the currently vacant role of Secretary General of the CPA, a position which will be decided upon in coming months.
