Inquiry into support for students with learning disabilities

Inquiry into the identification and support for students with dyslexic, dyspraxic, and autism spectrum disorders

Parliament’s Education and Science Committee has today launched an inquiry into learning opportunities for dyslexic, dyspraxic, and autism spectrum students in primary and secondary schools.

The inquiry was launched after a briefing to the committee from the Ministry of Education on how it identifies and supports students with dyslexia, dyspraxia and autism spectrum disorders.

Committee chairman, Dr Jian Yang, encourages New Zealanders who have personal or professional experience with the identification and support for dyslexic, dyspraxic and autism spectrum students to make a submission to the committee. The closing date for submissions is 2 October 2015.

Dr Yang is optimistic about the inquiry. “The committee has agreed that this is an important issue for a large number of New Zealanders, with dyslexia alone affecting an estimated 70,000 schoolchildren nationwide. The committee wants to ensure that these students are getting fair opportunities to raise their educational achievement, and that the education system is equitable and inclusive for all New Zealand children.”
