End of Occupation Welcome

Rt Hon Winston Peters

New Zealand First Leader

Member of Parliament for Northland
9 SEPTEMBER 2015

End of Occupation Welcome

Northland MP Rt Hon Winston Peters says the Far North will be pleased the occupation of Kaitaia airport is over and that common sense prevails.

“Whilst not in any way approving of the occupation, the fact is that Ngati Kahu should have benefited from a Wellington High Court decision last month asking the Waitangi Tribunal to reconsider in their case.

“That High Court decision should have been a signal to the Minister of Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Chris Finlayson, but he totally ignored it,” says Mr Peters, New Zealand First Leader.

“I am pleased that my message to the Minister about proper process got through to the protestors and that the occupation has been called off.

“It demonstrates that the functions of Parliament do matter and that all Ngati Kahu was seeking was a fair hearing, as their comments on the parliamentary debate this morning indicate.”
