The Contract and Commercial Law Bill
4 July 2016
The Contract and Commercial Law Bill
A new revision bill is being considered by a Parliamentary select committee.
The bill seeks to make a series of Acts relating to contract and commercial law more accessible, by re-enacting them in an up-to-date form. A revision bill may not change the effect of the law except to:
· Make minor amendments to clarify Parliament’s intent, or reconcile inconsistencies between provisions
· Update any monetary amount (other than an amount specified for the purpose of jurisdiction or an offence or penalty)
Therefore, the
bill does not make any substantive policy changes.
Parliament’s Justice and Electoral Committee is now accepting public submissions on the bill. Committee chairperson, Jacqui Dean MP, said that “Although the bill makes no substantive changes to the law, we’re looking forward to hearing what New Zealanders think about the bill and whether the changes do make the law more accessible.“
Submissions to the Justice and Electoral Committee are due by midnight on 12 August 2016.
