Helen Kelly: Union Leader Had a Heart for Ordinary Kiwis
Union leader Helen Kelly had a heart for average Kiwis getting a fair chance, says New Zealand First Leader and Northland Member of Parliament Rt Hon Winston Peters.
“Regardless of anyone’s political persuasion, New Zealanders admired her feisty commitment to workers and to the union movement.
“Her work advocating for the Pike River mine workers, her incredible campaign to reduce deaths and injuries in the forestry industry, and her work for others who might be considered on the margins of our society will be remembered.
“Helen more than earned her place, not just in union history, but in our national story.
“In her usual tenacious way she showed great courage battling terminal lung cancer.
“New Zealand First offers its condolences to Ms Kelly’s family.”
