Dean - Ultra-Fast Broadband extension huge boost for Central Otago

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean says expansion of Ultra-Fast Broadband across more Central Otago towns is a huge step forward for businesses and local communities.

“I’m just delighted at this UFB roll-out. I’m consistently hearing from businesses
and locals alike that they want and need better broadband coverage – and now they are going to get it.

“With increasing tourism and business growth in these Central Otago towns, ultra-fast broadband in a necessity.

“I have campaigned on behalf of Central Otago communities to get this expansion because I understand that's what's needed to allow tourism and business growth to continue.

“There are companies waiting in the wings to come to some of these towns, but they won’t make the commitment until the UFB coverage is there.

“That makes this extension about more than just improved communication – it’s also about economic growth and development, and it’s what I’ve been hoping could be achieved in Central Otago sooner rather than later.

“The Government’s total investment in Otago and Southland UFB connectivity is $152.4 million - that’s a huge commitment to our region and it’s a big tick for some of our more remote and isolated communities.

“Under the latest extension of the Government’s Ultra-Fast Broadband programme, world-class broadband will be rolled out to an additional 22 towns in Otago.

“This will provide approximately 7000 more Otago households and businesses with access to faster, more reliable internet.

“Five additional highways across Otago will also receive new mobile coverage with approximately 120kms covered across State Highway 6, 8, 85, 87 and 90.

“The Otago region will also receive new mobile black spot coverage for 10 tourism areas, including Beaumont - Clutha Gold Trail, Makarora - Mount Aspiring National Park, Mou Waho Island - Lake Wanaka, Blue Pool - Haast Pass Road, the entrances/exits to Greenstone Track, Lindis Valley, Moa Creek, Taieri Mouth, Trotters Gorge and Waitaki Lakes area.” ends
