New Zealand Shares Success Stories at Women Political Leaders Global Forum
New Zealand Member of Parliament Barbara Kuriger will join over 250 women leaders from around the world at the annual Women Political Leaders Global Summit in Iceland this week.
“We can do it!” is the theme of this year’s summit, co-hosted by the Parliament of Iceland. It provides a forum for women parliamentarians and leaders from civil society to the business world, to come together from every corner of the globe to discuss pressing challenges. The exchange of best practice in leadership, legislation, and political agenda-setting will be the focus to finally push gender equality from theory into reality.
New Zealand’s very own, Rt Hon Helen Clark, Former Prime Minister and Recent Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, is presenting to delegates on how women leaders can change the world, and how to turn the sustainable development goals into reality. Rethinking policies for peace, security, and defence, labour market inclusion, and disparities in maternal healthcare are some of the other important issues on the agenda this week.
The Speaker of the House, Rt Hon Trevor Mallard is pleased that New Zealand is taking part in the summit as the importance of gender equality gains momentum across the globe.
“A healthy democracy can be measured by the diversity of its elected representatives. Barbara Kuriger will share New Zealand’s strong history for gender equality on the world stage. I look forward to discussing her experiences when she returns to ensure our Parliament continues to develop effective strategies to support current women MPs and encourage more to enter in the future.”
The summit runs from 28 to 30 November.
