Indonesian Speaker visits New Zealand in Celebration of 60 Years of Diplomatic Relations

His Excellency, Bambang Soesatyo Prijono, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, along with a delegation of Indonesian MPs, are visiting New Zealand as official guests of the New Zealand Parliament, from 8 November to 11 November 2018.

New Zealand’s Speaker, Rt Hon Trevor Mallard, is pleased to host this visit.
“New Zealand enjoys a collaborative, growing relationship, with our Pacific neighbour Indonesia; a vibrant democracy with a highly diverse population. Indonesia has a rapidly growing middle class and is projected to be the 7th largest economy in the world by 2030. This presents a valuable opportunity to enhance our relationship on a number of fronts, including stronger parliamentary, education, tourism, and trade links”.

The delegation will be exposed to New Zealand’s internationally respected financial and legislative scrutiny procedures for holding the Government to account, while meeting with and observing select committees. In addition to observing question time in the House, meeting with the Speaker, and cross-party New Zealand MPs. They will meet with the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Preparedness to discuss approaches to disaster risk-management, resilience and preparation for natural disasters, and how to ensure essential Executive and legislative functions can continue with minimum disruption. There will also be a concert to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations, which will feature performances of traditional music by musicians from both countries.

The programme will conclude with a roundtable discussion with academics and students from the Victoria University of Wellington’s Centre for Strategic Studies and engagement with the local Indonesian community living in New Zealand.
