New Zealand to strengthen parliamentary expertise alongside Commonwealth colleagues in South Africa

Maureen Pugh MP will represent New Zealand this week at the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Fundamentals Programme on Parliamentary Practice and Procedure in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Rt Hon Trevor Mallard, the Speaker of the New Zealand Parliament, said “there is no other workplace quite like Parliament. Our MPs come from a wide range of careers, bringing different backgrounds and skillsets.

“It is important that our public representatives undertake training in parliamentary scrutiny, accountability, and advocating effectively for communities. An excellent way to learn is through sharing experiences and ideas with international colleagues.

“Ms Pugh will share our perspective with global parliamentary experts, while making people-to-people connections from within our diverse Commonwealth.”

The interactive and comprehensive programme is hosted in partnership with the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. It combines online courses with a week of lectures and workshops on site at the university. The programme is designed to meet the unique professional development needs of new parliamentarians, including parliamentary procedure, international best practice, and the changing nature of parliaments.

The programme runs from 19 to 24 November 2018.
