Turning the Tide in the Battle Against Kauri Dieback And Myrtle Rust
New Zealand First welcomes the Coalition Government’s announcement of an additional $13.75 million in funding over three years for research to combat the spread of kauri dieback and myrtle rust.
The announcement delivers on the Coalition Agreement commitment to increase support for National Science Challenges to counter the incursions, says Jenny Marcroft, New Zealand First Spokesperson for Conservation.
“Kauri dieback and myrtle rust are slow-moving catastrophes that threaten some of our most iconic natives. This increased funding for the National Science Challenges means that scientists can begin critically important research into long-term solutions,” says Ms Marcroft
“Maintaining the uniquely clean, green character of our environment is a core focus of New Zealand First. That’s why we made biosecurity a priority at the negotiating table, and continue to advocate for a well-resourced biosecurity system capable of effectively addressing incursions when and where they occur.
“I am proud to be part of a Government taking decisive action to ensure our natural heritage, which is of immense economic and cultural significance, is protected.
“We also look forward to seeing the coalition commitment to increase support for National Science Challenges to find alternatives to 1080 being progressed,” says Ms Marcroft
