United New Zealand Party List Announced
24 October 1999
UNITED NEW ZEALAND PARTY LIST ANNOUNCED
United New Zealand leader, Hon Peter Dunne, today announced his Party’s list for the coming General Election.
“This list is a collection of historic firsts for a New Zealand political party, and I am extremely proud of all the candidates we have selected.”
“They come from a wide background – business, the professions, farming, meida and the community, and all are impressive and respected leaders in their fields.”
“Every single one of them would grace the New Zealand Parliament, and be a considerable improvement on many of those there now,” he says.
The list includes:
The first Korean candidate for the New Zealand
Parliament – Woon Kim;
The first Filipino candidate for
the New Zealand Parliament – Kookie Samin;
The first
Pakistani candidates for the New Zealand Parliament –
husband and wife team Dr Yousuf and Dr Rehana
Qureshi;
The first Bangladeshi candidate for the New
Zealand Parliament – Atiqur Rahman
The first Iranian
candidate for the New Zealand Parliament – Seyed
Hosseni.
Altogether, United’s list contains representatives of ten different nationalities, and is, according to Mr Dunne, the most widespread reflection of modern, multicultural New Zealand ever put forward by a political party in this country.
If United holds Mr Dunne’s Ohariu Belmont seat, as is widely expected, the Party will cross the threshold for list seats, which means it will require just 1.3% of the Party vote to gain a second MP; and 2.1% to gain a third MP.
The full United list is attached.
