Common Currency Study Fires Up The Debate At Last

“The release today of the Institute of Policy Studies’ study on a common currency must signal a serious reopening of the debate as to whether New Zealand can afford to remain the smallest industrialised country with its own independent monetary policy”, said Simon Carlaw, Chief Executive of the New Zealand Manufacturer’s Federation.

ManFed’s own research supports the conclusions reached by the Institute and the remarkable degree of consensus evident among the wide range of businesses surveyed as part of the review.

“We are particularly interested in the growing body of research that points to the very positive impacts on trade and job growth of common currencies”.

“It is also clear that debate on the conclusions of this study will throw light on the case for broadening and deepening the CER relationship with Australia. In this context, the forthcoming Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Select Committee enquiry is very timely and significant”.

“Graham Kelly is to be congratulated on this initiative and we hope politicians on all sides of the House will follow his constructive example”.
