Commissioner Welcomes Budget Move On Education Advocacy

"Funding to provide advocacy for children and their parents/caregivers to assist in the resolution of problems arising in the education sector is great news," said Roger McClay, Commissioner for Children.

Mr McClay was commenting on the news from the ‘Budget’ that the Office of the Commissioner for Children would be financed to provide an Education Advocacy Service.

Mr McClay said he would be moving quickly to appoint three key staff to establish the service to serve the needs of at risk students.

"If we can help improve outcomes for schools and students, by maintaining our challenged students within the education system, we will be serving their needs and rights more appropriately," the Commissioner said.

He added that the extra funding (from the Education Vote) would assist his staff in helping to reduce barriers to learning which are created by conflict between schools, students and parents.

Mr McClay said that improving the relationships between the education sector and New Zealand communities would also serve children well.
