Eradication Best Option

Media Release

5 July 2000
Eradication Best Option

"The National Beekeepers Association implores the Cabinet Policy Committee to opt for the eradication of the Varroa mite when it meets later this week," said Terry Gavin the NBA President today.

"It is disappointing that Cabinet did not make a decision on Monday."

"The NBA takes some hope from the fact that Cabinet felt the need to revisit what we understand was a control option put to them by MAF."

"Officials from the NBA and related industries met officials from the Prime Ministers department yesterday (Tuesday) and strongly advocated for eradication, and more beekeeper input into decision making," said Mr Gavin.

"There is a lack of understanding by officials of the implications for beekeepers' apiary management if a control option is forced upon us."

"To date, it appears that the needs of the whole beekeeping industry, and New Zealand's ability to export first rate primary products, has taken a back seat."

"The beekeeping industry and the whole New Zealand economy can not accept a control option if all it means is beekeepers go bankrupt and our primary industry operations are severely tested."

"This is our industry. Government officials must not dictate to beekeepers how they manage their businesses through this calamity. The Varroa mite will cost beekeeping and New Zealand dearly if we are forced to live with this parasite."

"Rest assured that the NBA and other primary industry organisations will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to persuade the Government to implement an eradication programme," concluded Mr Gavin.
