~ 31 August - registrations close for the fifth meeting of the Asia-Pacific Military Operations Research Symposium (AMORS) which will be held in Wellington from 7 to 9 November. If you would like to go and meet with defence and defence related personnel who are active users or managers of OR/OA applications in the solution of military problems; defence planners and defence policy officials who deal with force development, capability planning and resource allocation decisions; defence force officers who are involved in force planning activities or defence academics who may be focussed on force structure and resource allocation issues using OR/OA techniques then this is the conference for you. *** NATIONAL *** ~ 26 August to 26 November - The Parihaka Exhibition, Wellington City Gallery - the draft release from the City Gallery reads [edited] a collaborative project initiated by the City Gallery, Wellington, and the people of Parihaka Pä, Taranaki. It will be the most dynamic and dramatic exhibition the City Gallery has ever undertaken ... it is a project of immense importance, not only to the arts community but to people from all walks of life. Importantly, it explores and illuminates the cultural realities of both Maori and Pakeha. It also brings to public attention one of the darkest moments in New Zealand's history: the invasion of Parihaka Pä by colonial forces on 5 November 1881, and the imprisonment to exile of its people, in an attempt to crush the heart of Maori independence. The Parihaka exhibition gathers together some of the greatest art works produced in this country in the last few decades. Through the eyes and minds of some of our great artists we experience and begin to understand the legacy of Te Whiti, Tohu and the Parihaka Pä. ~ FRI, 4 August - Hiroshima Day stall in Commercial St from 10 am to 4pm, organised by Golden Bay Peace Group. During the week 31 July to 4 August, GBPG are encouraging people to sign the Unesco Manifesto 2000. Baylink Communications (between Kirks and Hammer Hardware in Commercial St) will have the website accessible free during business hours. Golden Bay High School will have Internet access open to the public in the Art room between 3-15pm and 5pm each day. Collingwood Area School will also provide access to the website for the public - details from the school tel (03) 524 8125. People can sign paper copies at the stall on 4 August and we will send them in electronically. Manifesto 2000 is a 6-point pledge of personal commitment to peace, justice and environmental responsibility. It is part of Unesco's promotion of the International Year for the Culture of Peace.
