GE Labelling Protest – Midday Wellington Today

GE Labelling Protest – Midday Wellington Today

Friday, 28th July

Park Royal Hotel - corner of Grey and Featherston Streets

12 noon to 2pm

Please bring banners and costumes if you can

It's crunch time once again for GE labelling. Please encourage your neighbours, friends, relations, anyone who might be concerned.

On Friday Australian and New Zealand Health Ministers will meet in Wellington to discuss labelling. The Australian Health Minister is trying to back off from full GE labelling, and is putting serious pressure on the Australian state ministers (and no doubt on NZ Health Minister Annette King) to do the same.

The Australian Government is favoring a soft labelling scheme, which would see most products exempted from labelling, including tinned food, biscuits, chocolate, frozen dinners, sweets, ice cream, takeaways and restaurant food.

The only people that will benefit from a soft labelling scheme are the GE companies like Monsanto. Most consumers don't want to eat genetically engineered food, but unless genetically engineered food is labelled, we have no choice.

New Zealand's vote at this meeting will be crucial. There will be a protest outside the Park Royal Hotel on Friday, where Annette King is meeting the Australian health ministers. We need a strong presence to remind Annette King and the media that consumers want full GE labelling, and we want it now rather than later.
