Grey Power Manawatu Says Police Need Resources

Media Release

Monday, 20 November 2000

Grey Power Manawatu Says,

New Zealand Police need the resources to keep death off the roads and to carry out its normal duties. Sufficient resources must be provided to enable our Police Force to carry out its duties with out undue stress to its officers or lack of confidence in the Force spreading in the community.

Responding to the publicity The Evening Standard has given to the reduction in police numbers on the ground Grey Power Manawatu comments that;

We are fortunate that Palmerston North has its Safer Community Council, and a strong Neighbourhood Watch Organisation. Both organisations work with full police support.

Grey Power urges our region residents to get behind our Police and be extra Vigilant over the next few months.

We congratulate senior Constable Iain Watson for speaking out. Mr Watson should certainly not suffer from his courage.

Grey Power recognises that Superintendent Lamas and Inspector Dave Scott have a difficult job juggling resources.

Grey Power accepts that care needs to be taken not to raise fear in the community, but common sense dictates that lower police numbers makes it easier for criminals to go about their business.

As Mr Lamas commented to the Evening Standard “This does put pressure on police ability to provide normal services.”

It is incumbent on us all to lock our house and keep the catches on the windows even when in the garden, or popping out for a moment.

We all need to pick up the phone and call the police when we see someone acting suspiciously.
