“Health Critics Express Appreciation For Departing Wyatt Creech”

“As one of the strongest critics of the health policy of the former National government in the 1990s we want to express our appreciation for the work of departing former health minister Wyatt Creech,” said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today. “Mr Creech should not interpret praise from us as a kiss of death.”

“We strongly disagreed with the principles that underpinned his government’s health policy, particularly its emphasis on destabilising commercialisation and privatisation. But we also respected his hard work, decency and focused approach as health minister.”

“It is interesting that his public statements over health policy direction when health minister were not fundamentally different from those of his successor as minister, Annette King. It is unfortunate that the system he was responsible for was so flawed. His recent statement that a future National government would not overturn the new health system is also appreciated for its maturity and common sense.”

“We also congratulate Roger Sowry as National’s health spokesperson. We are keen to move on in our relationship with his party and encourage as much as possible a multi-party consensus on the direction of health policy.”

“Perhaps Mr Creech could best be summarised as a good health minister responsible for a bad health system,” concluded Mr Powell.
