Age Concern's New President Inherits A Strong Organisation
“I believe there is no other organisation in New Zealand more prepared and able to improve the quality of life of older people,” says Dave Henry, Age Concern National President.
At their AGM in Hastings on 11 April, Mr Henry was elected as the new National President of Age Concern New Zealand and its 28 local Age Concern Councils around the country.
“It has been an interesting process over the last couple of years as we worked towards adopting membership standards acceptable by all Age Concern Councils,” says Mr Henry. “That’s been achieved, with a new constitution as a result. No mean feat considering the wide diversity within Age Concern.
“The work of previous Presidents and Executive members have produced a very powerful organisation, through building strong bonds with the Age Concern family and cementing constructive relationships, nationally and internationally, with other older peoples’ groups, NGOs, and government departments.
“It’s also exciting to have Garth Taylor on board as the new Age Concern Chief Executive,” Mr Henry says. “Through enhancing existing services and seeking new, innovative ways of promoting healthy, active ageing for people of all ages, Age Concern will continue to consolidate its position as New Zealand’s leading advocate for older people.”
Mr Henry has a long association with Age Concern going back over 20 years. He first joined the Finance and Executive committees of Age Concern Otago, serving there for nine years. He was appointed as their Executive Officer in 1989, until retiring this month. He has been elected to the Age Concern New Zealand Board for the last nine years. Before joining Age Concern, Mr Henry worked at Trust Bank Otago for 30 years.
