Radio Boo Boo A No No
"Broadcasting Minister 'Boo Boo' Hobbs is happy to destroy the viability of the private radio stations that young people currently listen to," says Libertarianz Leader Peter Cresswell, noting "that is the only conclusion I can draw from her commitment to 100% taxpayer funded radio network targeting this same market."
"Thanks to the previous deregulation of the broadcasting industry, young people throughout New Zealand already have the choice of several radio stations meeting their needs and tastes. I totally support the campaign by radio station 'The Edge' against Hobbs proposal for a taxpayer-funded government network to compete with them" says Cresswell. "We don't need Radio Boo Boo!"
"To the extent it is successful, a taxpayer-funded radio station would take listeners from the current commercial stations, threatening their viability and ultimately restricting choice to the one, Boo Boo-approved, state radio station for young people" warned Cresswell. "And to the extent it is not successful, it is a waste of my money!"
"Hobbs claims the station is to promote New Zealand music, but neglects to note that most commercial youth stations already play very high levels of New Zealand music without taxpayer subsidies, according to what audiences demand."
"Cresswell concluded "I can only presume that the Government wants a propaganda outlet to poison the minds of young people in the way that National Radio poisons the minds of older folks - with politically correct, state-worshipping claptrap. We don’t need Boo Boo's station, and it is becoming increasingly apparent we don't need Boo Boo either."
