In Support Of Ike Signs And Freedom Of Expression!

A day for fair-minded citizens to stand up and be counted. If you support freedom of expression, and a gutsy citizen who was brave enough to publicly expose politicians who didn't keep their election promises -and you can make the time - please be there!

This decision affects ALL community and protest groups. The Water Pressure Group hasn't called for your solidarity before on this issue - we are now - because this decision affects us all.

(Remember, it was the Auckland City Council that took Ike to Court to force him to remove his signs.)

Under this ruling, the only signs that you are allowed on your own property in a residential area are commercial advertising signs, (one only) advertising a lawful use of the site and advertising only products or services available on the site.

"Subject to (provisions about signs on or outside dairies) signage in residential zones shall be limited to a single externally facing sign for each road frontage, advertising a lawful use of the site, located on the site to which the use occurs and advertising only products and services available on the site."

(Part 27, Clause 27.5.1 of the Auckland City Consolidated Bylaw 1998)

So - "Merry Xmas", "Have a nice day", "Beware of dog?" "No junk mail?" Wake Up Auckland?" ......???????? All subject to potential prosecution by Council? What about all the political hoardings that go up on private residential properties????

This is just NOT ON and although the WPG will not be risking contempt of Court penalties - we are definitely not going to just accept this decision. We believe that the Human Rights Commission should fund an appeal. The Water Pressure Group have no resources yet are playing a really important role in defending basic human rights (water, freedom of expression, genuine elections) Isn't the Human Rights Commission supposed to be the 'watchdog' protecting the human rights of ordinary citizens?

Surely the costs of defending our basic human rights should not fall on to voluntary community groups or courageous outspoken citizens who lack the resources of the Human Rights Commission?

If you are a member of a group or organisation, can you please make an effort to let as many of your members know as possible, and please try to get as many members along as you can. Concerned individuals - please tell everyone you know and get the word out. YOU are really important here!

We realise Wednesday is a work day for most people, but hope you can do your best.
