Final Results Of The 'Survey Of The Health Of The Mäori Language' Now Available
Today the final results of the Survey of the Health of the Mäori Language 2001 were made available on the Te Puni Kökiri website www.tpk.govt.nz These replace the provisional results released late last year.
The survey undertaken by Statistics New Zealand on behalf of Te Puni Kökiri, collected information from 5,000 Mäori respondents, showed that 9% of Maori adults can speak Mäori 'well' or 'very well', while a further 33% have some Maori language speaking skills.
The results provide information about the knowledge and use of the Mäori language at both a national and regional level. This information can be used to assist government agencies, local iwi and Mäori communities in planning their own Mäori language programmes.
