“Significant advances have been made in
the provision of subsidised superannuation for senior
doctors employed by district health boards,” said Mr Ian
Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried
Medical Specialists, today.
Mr Powell was referring to the Association’s latest Health Dialogue (‘Superannuation for Senior Doctors in District Health Boards’).

“Since access to former government
schemes was closed off in 1992, subsidised superannuation
has been a major priority for senior doctors. The
industrial landscape has gradually changed over the last
decade, dramatically in the last 2-3 years, with
superannuation now prevailing throughout senior doctor
collective agreements in district health
boards.” “Although there are still further improvements to
be made in some district health boards we are pleased with
the major advances that have been made. It is simply not
possible to recruit and retain senior doctors without a
competitive entitlement to subsidised
superannuation.” “Health bosses should also give serious
consideration to making subsidised superannuation available
for other parts of the health workforce,” concluded Mr
Powell. Ends
