“Welcome to the real world, Mr Campbell”, was the reaction from Peter Osborne, the Libertarianz Associate Spokesman for Education Deregulation, after Andrew Campbell, the Co-President of the New Zealand University Students Association lambasted Steve Maharey for the proposed reduction of access to the living component for student loans.

“Students are free to seek loans elsewhere, like the rest of us, if they so wish. Of course, the lender will be free to refuse the loan or to ensure that the loan will be paid back. Unlike the Government lending scheme, whose creditors, i.e., the tax payer, have no choice in the lending process.”

Mr Osborne continues, “This in fact may be a more prudent avenue for students to take, as the lending institutions would only lend to people who, at the end of their education would stand a good chance of paying their loans back. The students who are refused a loan will have probably been refused for a good reason and will also have been saved from a lot of financial grief later in life.”

Mr Osborne is also critical of the Government, ”What is the Government doing in the lending business anyway, especially when the money they are lending is not rightfully theirs in the first place? As it is the excess of borrowed money washing around the tertiary system has seen worthwhile courses crowded out by populist frippery - and all funded by stolen tax dollars.”

He concludes: “A Libertarianz Government will separate itself completely from the lending business and Education. Extortion will remain illegal and Libertarianz will make sure that this law applies to Governments also. This will allow every citizen to keep their earnings to spend and lend their money wherever anf to whom they like.”
