~ 22 October to 3 December - Ship for World Youth 2002, the purpose of 'The Ship for World Youth' is to foster the spirit of international cooperation and to promote friendship and mutual understanding between the youth of Japan and youth from other areas of the world. The Ministry of Youth Affairs, together with the Embassy of Japan, is in the process of selecting young people for the Ship for World Youth 2002 New Zealand delegation which will comprise one national leader and ten young people. Applications relating to the role of National Leader are to be received at the Ministry of Youth Affairs by Friday 14 June; all other applications for the participating youth are to be received at the Ministry of Youth Affairs by Friday 28 June. ~ Urgent! and 3 July - support the Ngawha people who are opposing the construction of the prison on wahi tapu. Their appeal against the Environment Court’s granting of resource consent, which ignored Maori spiritual and cultural grounds for not wanting a prison built on the site, was heard last week by the High Court in Wellington. Since then, heavy rainfall and rising water levels have added to the concerns about the increased levels of mercury in the Ngawha stream which runs into the Wairuhe River, then into the Waitangi River from which Waitangi and Paihia residents get their water. As one of the resource consent conditions, mercury levels in the water have to be tested monthly. The 'Northern Advocate' reported on 10 June that "Council monitoring manager Tony Phipps confirmed mercury levels in the stream had reached a 'trigger level' of 5.4 parts per billion, compared with the 'satisfactory' level of two parts per billion."

Despite the Northland Regional Council announcing on 3 June that "the Department of Corrections has been told to halt all major earthworks on the construction site" during the winter months, May to October, work continues.
