Electoral Rolls Close Tuesday

For immediate release Sunday 23 June 2002

ELECTORAL ROLLS CLOSE TUESDAY

Tuesday 25 June is the last chance eligible electors have to enrol or
update their details on the electoral rolls for this year's general election before the rolls close for printing.

Electoral Enrolment Centre National Manager Murray Wicks said that while the majority of people are enrolled, there are still a large number of eligible electors that are not yet on the roll.

"We're pleased that 2.58 million electors are enrolled but there are still 240,000 people that need to enrol.

"With so little time before the rolls close for printing, we're encouraging all those not yet enrolled to either enrol or update their details online or to visit their local PostShop, public library or council office to pick up an enrolment form. They can either post or fax the form back to us by Tuesday 25 June to make sure they get their name on the printed roll," Mr Wicks said.

Enrolment forms are also available by calling 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 36 76 56).

"People who miss the Tuesday enrolment deadline will still need to enrol but they will have to cast a Special Declaration Vote which can take up to five times longer."

All those enrolled by Tuesday will receive an EasyVote pack from the Chief Electoral Officer before the election. This pack will contain information on voting and an EasyVote card that will make the voting process much easier.

"With less than five weeks to go until the general election, it's important that people are properly enrolled so they can vote on election day," Mr Wicks said.
