204,000 Still To Enrol
2 July 2002
Less than four weeks out from the general election on Saturday 27 July, there are still 204,000 eligible electors that need to enrol so they can vote.
Electoral Enrolment Centre National Manager Murray Wicks said that although the electoral roll has closed for printing, people can enrol or update their enrolment details up until Friday 26 July, the day before the election.
“When the electoral rolls closed for printing on Tuesday 25 June, there were 2.6 million electors enrolled but we’re still focusing on the 7.3% of estimated eligible electors that need to enrol by Friday 26 July to be able to cast a valid vote.
“We’re encouraging people to enrol as soon as possible so they can be sent voting information before Election Day.”
Enrolment update forms were sent to all registered electors in early May, with people only needing to return them if their details needed updating. Anyone who didn’t receive a pack is not enrolled and must now fill in a new enrolment form.
Enrolment forms are available from PostShops, public libraries and council offices, by calling 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 36 76 56) or from the elections website www.elections.org.nz.
Mr Wicks said that eligible electors can also check and update their enrolment details and enrol online.
“The outcome of the election affects all New Zealanders, including our children so we’re urging those yet to enrol to do so to make their vote count,” Mr Wicks said.
