Green light for free trade talks great opportunity
The authority given by Congress to President Bush to negotiate on free trade will test in practice how far the US is prepared to liberalise its own economy, says the Employers & Manufacturers Association (Northern).
"This long overdue recognition by the US Congress that the US is an integral part of world trade is very welcome," said Bruce Goldsworthy, EMA's Manager of Manufacturing and Advocacy.
"The green light for opening free trade agreements negotiations represents a breakthrough opportunity for liberalizing world trade.
"But it will test whether the US is prepared to practice what it preaches regarding fair and free trade.
"New free trade agreements would deliver huge benefits to the US as well as to other countries, not least through reducing 'overseas aid'. Trade can boost other countries' economies far more sustainably than aid funding.
"This is an opportunity for the US to show genuine world leadership. They have a great chance to show they are open to free and fair trade, and play by the international conventions expected of other countries."
