Parents Centre votes to support
United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child

Delegates at the Parents Centre 50th anniversary conference, being held in Wellington this weekend, unanimously voted to support the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

“In voting to support the Convention, Parents Centre is signalling its support for a range of measures which recognise the inherent dignity of the child, and the need for an environment which supports parents in the raising of healthy and well adjusted children,” said Parents Centre Chief Executive, Sue Fitzmaurice.

“In light of recent events concerning child crime and the ensuing debate about parent and social responsibilities it is timely that Parents Centre New Zealand should look to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as a reminder of what we want for our children,” said Ms Fitzmaurice.

Parents Centre proudly supports each of the Conventions 54 articles, and will work with Government, its agencies and other organisations to ensure that the agreement is upheld.

(The Convention was adopted and ratified by the New Zealand Government in 1993).
Parents Centre is a long-standing advocate for family friendly communities and provider of antenatal and parent education. It is a not-for-profit organisation that currently supports and educates more than 8,000 members through 54 centres around New Zealand.
