World education unions join forces in

Education union representatives from nine countries will join forces with their New Zealand counterparts for an OECD seminar that starts in Wellington today.
The six day seminar on education and trade union policies has been organised by the NZEI as a member of Education International, a global federation of 311 associations and unions from 159 different countries.
New Zealand was chosen because of the interest in economic, industrial and educational restructuring that had taken place since the mid 1980s.
PPTA president Jen McCutcheon said the seminar provided an opportunity to highlight the impact of those changes on New Zealand education over the past 20 years.
“In the 1980s we saw a significant shift in ideology which impacted on New Zealand’s economy, society and all aspects of our education sector.
“Not all of the changes were positive. In the 1990s in particular, New Zealand teachers were placed under enormous pressure from declining real wage rates and worsening conditions from new social inequalities.”
Mrs McCutcheon said the seminar
would also enable educators from a number of different
countries to discuss strategies to deliver quality state
education in the 21st century.
