The tax that dares not speak its name
The tax that dares not speak its name
From 1 December, importers are being debited a new fee of $18 for every commercial shipment. Many importers will only become fully aware of how much this initiative of Mr Jim Anderton will cost them when they return from holidays and receive their monthly statements in January.
The Importers Institute described this fee as a tax. It is compulsory and is collected to pay for one of the basic functions of government, border protection. However, Customs Minister Rick Barker disagrees. "Unfortunately, some business leaders are still perpetuating inaccuracies about the fee. It is not a tax, as the money collected goes directly to Customs to cover the cost of services," Mr Barker said.
Well, thanks
for clearing that up, Minister.
