Norml Demands Amnesty For All Cannabis Users
It Is Unjust And Unfair To Have One Law For Nandor
And Another For The Rest Of Us
The Police's decision to dismiss a formal complaint of using cannabis against Green MP Nandor Tanczos shows good judgement, but the immunity must be extended to everyone else, said NORML New Zealand president Chris Fowlie today.
"The complaint failed to stick firstly because police had no evidence of a definite time and place that Nandor had used cannabis, but more importantly, police recognised that it was not in the public interest to prosecute Nandor because we need to have a full, honest and open debate about cannabis without people fearing for their liberty," he said.
"The police's decision to not prosecute is plain commonsense, but it must apply to all other New Zealanders as well. We cannot have one rule for Nandor and another for the rest of the country.
"We're concerned that straight-laced MP Craig McNair will waste more police time laying complaints against everyone else who has admitted trying cannabis, including Health Minister Annette King and United Future leader Peter Dunne.
"Where will it stop? Over half a million Kiwis smoke cannabis. All except one are at risk of arrest and imprisonment. Like Nandor, we should all be safe from prosecution while as a society we discuss what law is best."
