Save Power: Shut Down the Government

Save Power: Shut Down the Government

"Shut down over winter" said Libertarianz deputy Peter Osborne today, responding to the Government's call for power saving due to the inability of its own power companies to ration supply and demand effectively. "And I don't mean that productive New Zealanders should shut down," he clarified. "I mean that government departments should shut down."

"Instead of calling for department chief executives to save 15%, the Government should tell most of the chief executives and their staff to not turn up for work and go find something useful to do," he said. "Most of what these government departments do is utterly pointless, and most can easily be shut down for six months. Most New Zealanders will quickly be aware that they have lost nothing."

"Shutting down government departments for winter will mean considerable savings in another type of power," notes Osborne wryly. "A saving in the power of the state to interfere in our lives."

The spokesman then gave a conservative list of government departments and agencies that could shut down immediately with virtually nobody noticing any reduction in the quality of their lives, and saving millions in electricity and taxvictims' money:
