Large Print Giveth - Democracy Taketh Away?
"By announcing their intention to force a referendum on the reform of prostitution law, United Future MPs Baldock and Copeland show they have not yet given up on holding the self-ownership of prostitutes to ransom," says Libertarianz spokesman Stephen Berry, who has no hesitation in expressing his strong disapproval. "Not content with their religiously bigoted Puritanism, Dopecock and Baldhand now intend to use the referendum process to ease their Christian consciences. It seems that the rights of a few will depend on the opinions of the many - most of whom have no business being involved in what prostitutes do with their own bodies."
Berry clarifies his opposition to a referendum on the matter by stating, "There is never any justification for using the opinions of other people to restrict individual freedoms. The reform of prostitution laws constitutes clear progress toward individual liberty, however flawed the details of that reform. Supporters of individual liberty must fight the Copedock and Baldland petition every inch of the way."
"If people disapprove of prostitution then they should simply refuse to participate in the industry; they should not dictate to other people what they should do with their bodies. If people wish to abide by their view of the Christian faith, that is their own choice - but that choice gives them no right to try and control others," Berry concluded.
