High employment puts pressure on wages - union

News that unemployment has hit its lowest level in 16 years is being welcomed by the EPMU.

The Household Labour Force Survey, out today, shows that unemployment has fallen to 4.7 per cent – its lowest level since 1987, and eighth lowest among OECD countries.

EPMU national secretary Andrew Little said that it was always good news when unemployment fell and more people had jobs.

“This demonstrates just how tight the labour market is getting,” Mr Little said.

“Inevitably, this will mean employers will have to pay more to recruit and retain staff.”
