Countdown To Start Of Habitat For Humanity 'Women Build'

Time is running out for people wishing to participate in the upcoming Habitat for Humanity 'Women Build,' which commences on Monday the 15th of September.

Over 100 women have already signed up to spend a day on the Ormiston Rd (Manukau) building site – but opportunities for budding builders and home handywomen to participate remain.

"We have been heartened by the response that we have had so far, but there are a number of places left to fill. We need to have a full complement of 25 workers on site every day to ensure that we finish the project within two weeks," said Habitat for Humanity Spokesperson, Donna Roberts.

"We have also had a great response from corporate organisations, who have pledged goods and prizes to the build. For instance, Cerebos Gregg’s is supplying lunch and refreshments on site every day over the two weeks; Weathertex House cladding is being provided courtesy of John Scott Company Ltd, Dulux are supplying all of the paint for this house as they do with every Habitat home, and Ford is also offering a luxury weekend for one volunteer and their partner at Pauanui's Puka Park Resort – and of course a vehicle to get there and back!"

Corporate teams also feature prominently in the make up of volunteers donating time and skill to the project.

"In addition to the three corporates listed above, Harcourts, the Flight Centre and Nutrimetics are also sending teams to assist with the build," said Ms. Roberts.

"We also hope to have some celebrity involvement at different times over the two weeks, to help make the build all the more fun and enjoyable," she added.

The mission of Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate substandard housing from the world one family at a time. Families are selected to partner with Habitat for Humanity and provide 500 hours of 'sweat equity' into the building of their house and the homes of others. Families then pay back a no interest and no profit mortgage structured with affordable repayments, to become the owners of their own home.
