NZ Raelians Support Lifting Of The GM Moratorium
The NZ Raelian Movement Supports The Lifting Of The Gm
Moratorium
Members of the NZ Raelian Movement will have an "all GM meal" at Albert Park in Auckland on Saturday 25th October at 1.00pm to demonstrate their support for genetically modified foods.
Despite numerous scientific studies confirming that GM food is safe, the Green party, and other anti GM groups such as M.A.G.E ( Mothers Against Genetic Engineering), continue to spread false propaganda and use scare tactics to manipulate the New Zealand public.
Spokesperson for the NZ Raelian Movement, Mark Woodgate says, “New Zealanders need to be fully informed about the science of GM and to understand that genetically modified food is tested for toxicity, allergenicity and safety. GMOs are not contaminating non-GM and organic crops, nor are they threatening the diversity of the ecosystem."
“Anti GM groups are misleading the NZ public with their campaigns of disinformation and are encouraging people to stay away from GM without explaining the very real benefits of these foods.”
Of great significance is the fact that many scientists attest that GM foods are completely safe for human consumption.
· 200 scientists from around the world have signed a declaration attesting to the safety and benefits of agricultural biotechnology, support that comes on top of an earlier declaration signed by thousands.
· British Nobel prize winner Timothy Hunt “Genetically modified crops pose no danger to humans”
· UK Royal Society & the UK national academy of science concluded that genetically modified foods are as safe as non-modified foods.
· Canadian Biotechnology Advisory Committee concluded that GM foods have a long record of safety, having been in development for 30 years and show no evidence of harm.
· The GM Science Review has concluded that GM foods are as safe as conventional versions, with no evidence of harmful health effects from any product available worldwide.
· Britain's science academy says there is no evidence to suggest that eating genetically modified food is more dangerous than eating non-genetically modified food
· The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner, Jane E. Henney reports that the new genes, or the proteins newly introduced “don’t appear to have any effect on people eating them" The proteins of GM food are "non-toxic, rapidly digestible, and do not have the characteristics of proteins known to cause allergies."
· Researchers from the New Zealand Institute for Crop and Food Research, Ltd reports that the impact of GM crops is very similar to the impact of traditional breeding that has been an integral part of agriculture for many years.
