I Bet You Thought You Owned That Tree
"Don't ever take ownership of your own land for granted," warns Libertarianz Deputy Leader Stephen Berry following the dishing out of a $2500 fine to a ratepayer who cut down a tree on their own land.
Berry asks, "What is the point of owning private property when one government body or another will usurp control of it on a whim?" Under the Resource Management Act, permission is required from the Council to cut down large trees on your own property - without their permission, you have no right to trim your own tree.
"The $2500 fine was for an introduced tree. The property owners got off quite lightly considering the Council had the power to fine them up to $200,000. Fascism is an often-used word these days, but the several layers of government are the reason for it being so. In charging this fine, the Auckland City Council have explicitly said, 'you own the land, but we'll control it.''"
Stephen Berry urges voters to abandon traditional political parties if they want to accept their inalienable right to control their own land. "Left wing parties will openly violate your rights for the 'public good,' especially the Greens, who view land owners as mere transients. National is responsible for this abominable legislation, and ACT fails to promise its repealment. Libertarianz is the only party that will defend your right to control your land - if you value that right, then we need your support!"
