Momentum Grows for GE Free Tent Embassy
Organisers of the GE Free Tent Embassy in Wellington this weekend are preparing for bigger than expected numbers to converge on the Capital. “We have to rethink about the timing and location of the Embassy as people from all over the country have already arrived in the city and are keen to set up the embassy as soon as possible” Said Lenka Rochford, Wellington GE Free Coalition’s Spokesperson.
After thousands of submissions and consultations and the evidence against GE growing, the GE Free movement has become frustrated and disappointed with the Government. “We are starting to wonder in whose interest the Government is working,” said Rochford, “There is no evidence that GE is going to benefit New Zealand, in fact, the evidence points the other way. Yet, the Government passed legislation last week that gives biotechs the go-ahead to experiment with the future of our food security.”
Civil disobedience will definitely be on the agenda for discussion. Obvious, we have always been prepared to enter into a dialogue with the Government, but they have consistently refused to look at the facts of GE. Co-existence is impossible and pest resistance is inevitable.” Said Rochford.
Now that Speaker has publicly
stated we have the democratic right to peaceful assembly,
the Coalition could not foresee any possible impediments to
a peaceful weekend of fun and discuss to celebrate the
success of the GE Free movement so far and to plan for a GE
Free New Zealand.
