Women Push For Global Nuclear Disarmament

Events in Iraq this year, North Korea's revitalized nuclear programme and even the recent questioning of the relevance of New Zealand's anti-nuclear policy in relation to visits from US nuclear propelled and armed ships has put the nuclear issue right back in the forefront of local and national media.

"The National Council of Women of New Zealand (NCWNZ) affirmed its commitment to achieving total world nuclear disarmament by passing a remit to this effect" said Beryl Anderson, National President, following the recent meeting of NCW National Executive in New Plymouth.

NCWNZ members unanimously urged the government to continue its leadership role at the UN by calling for the elimination of all weapons of mass destruction and sponsoring a UN resolution calling for a Nuclear Weapons Convention.

"Women in NZ join women world wide in underlining their concerns about the legitimacy, possession and possible use of weapons of mass destruction," Beryl Anderson continued.

"As more and more countries are manufacturing these dangerous weapons it becomes harder to monitor and control them. The only guarantee we have that such weapons will never be used or produced is to eliminate them completely," she concluded.
