National President Graham Stairmand whole-heartedly endorses Rod Donald’s call for the abolition of tax on the first $5000 of income.

Grey Power agrees with Rod Donald that The Government could make a real a difference for battling families by adopting The Greens amendment to the Taxation Bill. The amendment aims to abolish tax on the first five thousand dollars of income.

The Grey Power President urges all those Political Parties who constantly call for a reduction in Taxes to support the amendment.

Grey Power believes that this would be the best of all Christmas presents for all low income Kiwi’s.

It is often overlooked that the Governments tax take from Superannuitants is substantial.

Grey Power is fighting to leave some discretional income in the pockets of the retired.

We consider that any proposal that will heighten this objective must be supported.

Such a move will also enhance the ability of Superannuitants to continue to save after reaching the age of entitlement.

All low-income families and the retired have been hit by continuing cost increases.

Adjustments to NZS based on the Cost Price index are retrospective. Indirect taxes have sneaked up making it increasingly more difficult for all low-income earners make ends meet.

Grey Power strongly supports the concept that the first $5000 income be tax-free as this is a practical way to provide more disposable income to the lower income earners. It should also be noted that much of this extra income will be spent and help increase economic activity.

The concept of a tax-free $5000 income may well have been discussed and deemed not to be a Government priority but we cannot accept that this course of action can both enormously expensive and most people would not get much. To those without much an extra $750 would be very welcome.
