Taking The 'I' Out Of ITI
"The so-called private tertiary education sector have no right calling themselves independent while they are receiving tax-victim funding," said Peter Osborne, the Libertarianz Spokesman for Education Deregulation, today.
"My advice to the Independent Tertiary Institutions (ITI) is to either change your name or re-establish yourselves as truly independent - and stop putting your hand out to Nanny for a piece of the action."
"It is attitudes like Mr Guerin's (the executive director of the ITI) that will see the demise of these institutions in the end. In the meantime, though, his recommendations for Government to further free up funding for private tertiary education will only ever lay those organisations wide open to further bureaucratic meddling and restrictions," Osborne continues, adding "It is a travesty when someone in Mr Guerin's position is prepared to put the whole industry in jeopardy purely because he is blind to the underhand scheming of politicians such as Steve Maharey. This is a con job, and the ITI are falling for it hook, line, and sinker."
Osborne advises, "All private education institutions, from pre-school to the tertiary sector, must resist all political interference at any level. They must stop and look at the situation they find themselves in today, with increased compliance workloads and costs. They have no freedom to expand, improve or re-write the State-enforced curriculum, employment restrictions, or disciplinary restrictions. This situation is going to get far worse while these institutions continue to pander to State bribery. By receiving these bribes they are only weakening their own resistance to further interference."
In conclusion, Osborne says, "Libertarianz see the very real need to get the State out of education altogether. For the education sector as a whole to prosper, and for pupils to receive real learning, it is imperative that education be released into the free market. Only there will schools of excellence be realized and rewarded by demand. Only in the free market will teachers of real ability be recognised and rewarded accordingly, and pupils will receive high quality education as they demand value for money. Schools will be tailoring their own curriculum to suit the demands of the pupils and parents instead of some low-life politician. Most importantly, though, politicians will run out of excuses to fleece New Zealanders."
