New fund for taking environmental action

WWF-New Zealand is calling for applications to its newly established Environmental Education Action Fund. The fund has been set up to promote and support environmental action through education.

"This fund is a really exciting initiative because it's all about taking the next vital step. We need to turn environmental education into action, if we are to have any hope of protecting New Zealand's irreplaceable biodiversity," says Chris Howe, WWF Conservation Director. The fund provides financial support to eligible projects from local communities and schools that use education as a tool to encourage people to engage in environmental action.

The closing date for the first round of applications to the fund is 1 April 2004.

Chris Howe, WWF Conservation Director, says priority is given to projects which:

" Have clearly defined learning outcomes that aim to address a specific environmental issue.

" Facilitate, support or promote opportunities for people to take action for their environment.

" Have sound project planning and evaluation processes.

" Are supported by the wider community.

" Enable teachers to deliver environmental education programmes as outlined in the Guidelines for Environmental Education in New Zealand Schools (Ministry of Education, 1999).

WWF manages this fund on behalf of The Tindall Foundation.
