Death with Indignity

"Lesley Martin's guilty verdict is a disgrace, and shows how primitive we really are as a society," said Peter Osborne, a Libertarianz Spokesman.

"In reality, Ms Martin has committed no crime. Instead she chose to help her mother and fulfil her mother's wishes in a time of need, rather than to obey a ridiculous law. For this she is to be commended, not convicted. It is a tragic shame that this jury did not exercise their right to call the law an ass, and to free her."

Osborne says that the issue of euthanasia should not even be up for debate by politicians. "The right to die is an individual right, final. It is not open to any arbitrary decision-making by unaffected parties, and it must be recognised as such. Those who disagree with the right to die are at complete liberty to live by their convictions. However, this does not give them the right to force their mistaken conclusions on other people."

Osborne concludes, "Libertarianz already have a fully written constitution that protects the rights of the individual. We recognise that each individual owns their own life and as such may choose to end that life if they wish. While many people are arguing that politicians change the law in regards to the right to die, Libertarianz are arguing for much more: that New Zealanders take full control of their own lives and reject the politicians who wish to run their lives for them. Only then will people be able to truly die - and, more importantly, live! - with dignity."
