MFAT media advisory: Brazilian restorative justice delegation

A Brazilian team of judges, prosecutors and a reform adviser is in New Zealand this week and next to observe the New Zealand restorative justice model in action. The group is in Wellington this week and Auckland next.

The visit is a follow-up to a visit to Brazil in March by Foreign Minister Phil Goff, during which he spoke on the New Zealand model of restorative justice. Brazil intends to set up a pilot youth justice scheme in one of Brasilia's satellite cities, Nucleo Bandeirante.

Three of the seven visitors are being funded under the Government's Latin America Strategy Fund, administered by MFAT, one is funded by NZAID and the other three are self-funded.

Several members of the team have good English and are willing to be interviewed.
